After the Semester

Issues After the Semester

What happens once the final exam is behind you — the narrow window for emergencies, and the plain calendar the rest of it follows.

A closed burgundy leather-bound book with a red silk bookmark ribbon rests on a warm oak desk beside a pair of folded tortoise-shell reading glasses, in soft late-afternoon window light.

Once the final exam or final assignment is behind you, the timelines change. The course is closed, the breaks are for rest, and my inbox observes them too. What follows is the short, plain rule for what happens next.

There are exactly two kinds of post-semester issue — the emergent, which has its own tight window; and everything else, which waits for the first Tuesday of the month I return.

§ 01

Emergent Issues

Emergent issues must be handled by, or on, the day and time of the Final Exam or final assignment as indicated on your course's calendar or syllabus — not necessarily the university's academic calendar or its published Final Exam schedule. Those two dates are not always the same. Follow the one that governs your course.

If you cannot reach me within that window, see Everything Else below, and know that grades can be changed — but not through the shortcuts described there.

Definition — What Counts as Emergent

An emergent issue is reserved exclusively for sudden illnesses experienced by either the student or the student's child. That is the whole of the category. If your matter does not fall inside it, it belongs to § 02.

If an emergent issue applies to you, the process is short:

  1. Review the “Exceptions to the Rules” section within the Course Policy.

  2. Contact the professor via the Contact page — this is the only permitted channel, in this window or any other.

§ 02

Everything Else

Let's face it: you've had approximately fifteen weeks to handle your issues. You may certainly contact the professor after the semester, but understand that emails received over the breaks are handled on a fixed schedule.

Replies to break-time email resume on the first Tuesday of these months:

Messages sent between semesters are read, then answered, on those Tuesdays — in the order they were received.

And, as always —

Contacting university administration — deans, secretaries, mascots of any species, and so on — in order to reach the professor is expressly prohibited, and will not work. The Contact page is the channel; it is the only channel.
